Gibsons, BC
Gibsons, BC (population: 4,000) is known as "The Gateway to the Sunshine Coast". This thriving community is accessed by a scenic 40-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay through Howe Sound. From the Langdale ferry terminal Gibsons is a short 5km/3mi drive. Perched on a hillside, it overlooks the marina and nearby Keats and Bowen islands as well as the Coastal mountain range. Gibsons has earned international recognition: in 2009 is was named the "Most Liveable Community under 20,000" in a world-wide competition by the UN-backed International Awards for Liveable Communities, and in 2005 it was awarded the Berkley Springs International Water Tasting Award “Gold Medal Winner”. But, it's perhaps most famously known as the location for the longtime hit TV show The Beachcombers, which first aired in 1972 and ran until 1990.
Recently tourism has taken over as the main industry in Gibsons. It attracts visitors with its casual blend of marine and land activities, suitable for all ages and ability levels. World class kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking and golf is all available and accessible year round. The fresh air, small town charm and relaxed lifestyle have convinced many to move to Gibsons. Residents enjoy a great natural living environment and many commute to Vancouver for work or 'telecommute' from the Sunshine Coast.
